Industry is a vital vehicle for development, and innovation is the primary driving force behind it. By aligning the innovation chain with industrial chains and using the innovation chain to guide the layout of industrial chains, today, industrial chains play an indispensable role in promoting high-quality development across entire industries.
So, how can paper-making enterprises promote the integration and coordination of the industrial chain?
Mr. Jiang Peng, General Manager of Global Technology R&D at APP Group Jin Guang, delivered a report titled “Linking the Industrial Chain to Achieve Energy Saving and Consumption Reduction in Pulp and Paper Enterprises” at the recently held 2024 Symposium on Green and Efficient Utilization of Fiber Resources and the 4th Seminar on New Technologies for Pulp and Paper.
New-quality productivity—integrating technology into industries.
The paper industry is a green and circular sector. Although, after years of energy conservation and consumption reduction, its overall energy consumption has continued to decline, the energy intensity per unit of output remains relatively high, posing greater challenges for enterprises.
For pulp and paper companies, where should they start to further achieve energy conservation and emission reduction?
Planning and design are of paramount importance. Enterprises, through technological advancement and upgrading, are building large-scale production lines from a high starting point, phasing out outdated capacity and production lines, and adopting advanced energy-use technologies and equipment.
In the past, production processes prioritized stability to avoid disrupting output. However, with the current rise in automation levels, stable production can now be achieved through automated control systems and computer-aided management. As society continues to advance technologically, the degree of automation will be maximized as much as possible, thereby enabling enterprises to achieve energy savings and reduced consumption.
A closed-loop, full-industry-chain approach that “extracts every last bit” of resources.
To further achieve energy conservation and emission reduction, pulp and paper enterprises should also adopt the concept of a circular economy, with production facilities fully integrated to include pulping, papermaking, chemical processing, cogeneration, and water treatment. The circular economy approach ensures that waste heat from wastewater and exhaust gases generated by paper mills—along with valuable energy sources such as hydrogen and methane available in chemical processes—can be fully utilized.
How can a circular economy be realized?
The key lies in fully leveraging the advanced technologies for alkali recovery from black liquor in pulp mills, thereby enhancing self-sufficiency in energy supply. Starting with the comprehensive utilization of resources, we can replace coal with biomass fuels—such as wastewater sludge from pulp mills and waste wood chips and bark generated during the pulp production process—to fuel incineration for heat and power generation. This transforms waste into valuable energy, reduces carbon emissions, and turns heat into a resource.
In addition, the original model of isolated power plants providing both heat and electricity entirely will be transitioned to a new model featuring fixed-point heat supply supplemented by external power, thereby improving the heat-to-power ratio and enhancing power plant efficiency.
